Ferdinand House
Completed 2021
Design: Tirs Studio
Construction: D3 Projects
Photography: Ben King
A considered renovation of a classic Canberra ex-govie, Ferdinand House was reimagined for a young family wanting a more functional, open, and connected home. The original home’s compartmentalised layout was opened up to improve internal flow and bring natural light deeper into the plan, while new connections to the backyard were introduced through a large glazed backdoor and servery window.
Project Feature: Ferdinand House was featured as a case study in Retuning the Ex-Govie - a design research guide by Flynn Hopkins, produced in collaboration with the Alastair Swayn Foundation, University of Canberra, and ACT Government. The publication explores the value of renovating and adapting Canberra’s ex-govie housing stock as a sustainable, cost-effective alternative to knockdown-rebuilds.
